Port-City Regions To Wave Med Cruise Destinations As Smart, Sustainable And Striking Eco-Tourism Systems

The PortCREW project aims to reshape cruise tourism in the Mediterranean by turning ports into gateways for smart and sustainable eco‑tourism. By strengthening cooperation among key port‑city regions across five Mediterranean countries, the project tackles the growing environmental and social pressures linked to cruise activity while unlocking the potential of lesser‑known natural and cultural destinations.

Partners from Thessaloniki (Greece), Ravenna (Italy), Toulon (France), Valencia (Spain), and Koper (Slovenia) will jointly design and test innovative collaborative solutions to better balance tourism flows and support sustainable local development.

At the heart of the project is the creation of an innovative transnational digital platform that will allow ports to provide cruise visitors with personalised and dynamic tourist information, tailored to different visitor profiles and real‑time conditions such as weather or crowding. In parallel, local stakeholders will co‑develop new tourism packages and services to enhance accessibility and promote inland destinations beyond the coastal areas.

PortCREW focuses on:

  • Mitigating overtourism and seasonal congestion in small and medium‑sized port cities receiving cruise ships.
  • Highlighting the tourism value of inland and lesser‑known areas through smart accessibility and digital tools.
  • Improving the social acceptance of cruise tourism by involving local communities in planning tourism flows.
  • Embedding sustainability principles into local tourism and development strategies.
  • Deploying and piloting digital info‑totems in three cruise ports, interconnected with the project platform.

Through a transnational and cross‑sectoral approach, PortCREW promotes a collaborative model of tourism development aligned with the EU Green Deal, the EU Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, and the priorities of the Interreg Euro‑MED programme.

FIT Role:
FIT Consulting plays a central role as leader in the development of the PortCrew platform, bringing its extensive expertise in technical and scientific support for innovative mobility and tourism services. As the project’s innovation manager, FIT ensures the delivery of high‑quality outputs and effective coordination among partners and stakeholders.

In the early stages of the project, FIT contributes to identifying the needs and expectations of cruise tourists, a key step for shaping the platform’s user‑centred design. FIT will also support the testing phase, facilitating communication between pilot sites and the platform developers to ensure that feedback from real‑world implementation is fully integrated. This process is essential to refine the platform, address challenges related to over‑tourism and seasonal peaks, and ensure that it responds effectively to the diverse needs of different user groups.

By leveraging its broad experience and commitment to innovation, FIT will help drive the project toward sustainable and impactful results.
