FIT Consulting launches the IKIGAI Project to Drive the Twin Transition in Logistics
Boosting Affordable, Collaborative and Coordinated Systems of Logistics Networks Across Europe
“We work for a better future, fostering collaboration rooted in respect and trust, and recognising the value of every action.”
— The IKIGAI Consortium motto
In July 2025, FIT Consulting proudly launched IKIGAI, a new Innovation Action project funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe, bringing together 30 partners committed to enabling the twin transition of logistics: digitalisation and decarbonisation.
Coordinated by FIT Consulting, the IKIGAI project sets a new course toward a more competitive, sustainable and collaborative logistics ecosystem in Europe.
The Kick-off Meeting, held in Rome on 8–9 July, gathered project partners from across Europe and featured renowned experts such as Prof. Mori, Prof. Alan McKinnon, and Prof. Benoît Montreuil, who shared their vision on the future of zero-emission logistics powered by the Physical Internet.
IKIGAI aims to revolutionise freight logistics through innovative solutions that help companies share resources, reduce emissions, and cut operational costs. By developing common standards and piloting smart technologies in real-world settings the project promotes a shift from fragmented competition to collaborative efficiency.
The Five Logistics Innovations (LIs) of IKIGAI
At the core of IKIGAI are five breakthrough Logistics Innovations designed to align operational deployment with long-term sustainability and governance:
- Trustee-led matchmaking & volume pooling
Enables intermodal, zero-emission transport through real-time capacity pooling and dynamic coordination. - SME-focused collaborative, eFTI-compliant platform
Equips small and medium-sized enterprises with standardised digital tools for regulatory compliance and seamless participation. - Smart synchromodal urban logistics hubs
Enhances multimodal last-mile deliveries using green vehicles and optimised urban infrastructure. - Blockchain-based carbon emissions chain of custody
Ensures transparency and traceability of CO₂ emissions data across multimodal transport chains. - Governance for pooled reusable modular packaging
Implements standardised packaging systems with efficient return and reuse logistics.
From Vision to Action: Methodology and Scale-Up
IKIGAI’s approach combines the development of a Physical Internet (PI) Norm, on-the-ground logistics audits, and a sector-wide governance structure known as the PI Coalition. These elements converge into the Golden Scale-up Package, a comprehensive framework to accelerate widespread industry adoption and pave the way for a zero-emission, digitally connected logistics future.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101202912.
