In 2027, the first 100% electric ferry between Europe and North Africa

Set to launch in 2027, the green corridor will connect Tarifa and Tangier with the first zero-emission maritime link between Spain and Morocco, operated by Baleària using fully electric ferries. The project marks a major step forward for sustainable mobility in the Mediterranean and is backed by a €45 million investment.

The ferries, currently under construction by the Armon shipyard in Gijón, will cover the 18-mile crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar without producing pollution or underwater noise. Each vessel will be powered by four electric motors, similar to those in electric cars but on a much larger scale, and will transport up to 804 passengers and 225 vehicles per trip, matching the capacity of current diesel ferries on the same route. At both ports, autonomous robotic systems will be installed to ensure fast, emission-free charging using Onshore Power System technology.

Environmental impact will be regularly monitored by marine biologists. The initiative is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by approximately 20,000 tons per year compared to existing diesel-powered services. The Strait’s rich biodiversity, including dolphins, whales, and various fish species, is currently affected by the constant maritime traffic. The new electric ferries will eliminate both emissions and underwater noise pollution along their route.
