Towards the smart city

5G, IoT and blockchain are reshaping urban mobility

In Italy, the drive towards smart cities clearly shows how 5G, the Internet of Things and blockchain are becoming the “basic ingredients” of urban innovation. (agendadigitale.eu) These technologies not only improve services but also redefine the way citizens, businesses and institutions interact in everyday mobility.

According to AgendaDigitale,”the evolution of smart cities represents a fundamental trend in contemporary urban governance”.
And while it is true that regional differences—between the North, Center, and South—remain evident at the moment, digitization can trigger concrete opportunities: reduced times, better use of urban space, and access to real-time data.

At the same time, the European Union is promoting coordinated projects for smart cities. (commission.europa.eu) The Smart Cities Marketplace platform brings together cities, companies, investors and stakeholders with the aim of scaling up innovative solutions across Europe. Key areas of action include sustainable urban mobility, integrated infrastructures linking energy, transport and ICT, and open governance models based on shared data.

Among the strategic levers identified by the EU, data openness and interoperability play a central role, enabling exchanges between different systems. Equally important are financial models that combine public funds, private capital and EU instruments. Added to this is support for project design and scaling, made possible through matchmaking initiatives and capacity-building programmes.

Italy is moving in a direction consistent with the European framework: the smart city is no longer a vision of the future, but a reality that demands technological cohesion, a shared vision and a widespread commitment at territorial level.
