EU invests €422M to support zero-emission mobility
On February 6, 2025, the European Commission selected 39 projects across the EU to expand alternative fuel infrastructure along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The funding, provided through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, aims to enhance Europe’s transport infrastructure.
This will include approximately 2,500 electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles along the European TEN-T road network, 35 hydrogen refuelling stations for cars, trucks and buses, the electrification of ground handling services in 8 airports, the greening of 9 ports and 2 ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Mobility, stated:
“In total, nearly 5,000 new charging points will be added, including 626 megawatt chargers, accelerating the shift to zero-emission transport and contributing to a cleaner environment.”
This initiative aligns with the EU’s broader commitment to cut emissions, enhance air quality, and strengthen the competitiveness of European industries. As part of this effort, on January 29, 2025, the European Commission introduced the Competitiveness Compass, a new framework designed to drive economic productivity and shape future work strategies, focusing on three key pillars: innovation, decarbonization, and security.
