Port of Venice says goodbye to Diesel: 88.7% CO2 reduction with HVO and 100% renewable energy

From February 1, 2025, all yard equipment at the PSA Venice Vecon container terminal—including reach stackers, forklifts, and terminal tractors—will run on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), an advanced biofuel made from renewable raw materials such as vegetable waste, residues, oils, and by-products. This shift delivers a significant environmental breakthrough: without requiring any modifications to the equipment, the terminal will cut CO2 emissions by 88.7% compared to traditional diesel, in line with Directive 2018/2001/EC.

Reinforcing this commitment, since December 2024, the terminal has been powered entirely by certified wind energy, marking a decisive step toward eliminating fossil fuel dependency. Looking ahead, the introduction of new electric E-RTG cranes in 2026 will replace the last two diesel-powered RTGs, bringing the terminal even closer to full decarbonization.
