Bologna and Ferrara go hydrogen. Zero-emission buses to hit the streets

Bologna and Ferrara go hydrogen

Starting in spring 2025, Bologna and Ferrara will introduce a major innovation in public transportation: the arrival of hydrogen-powered buses on their streets.

This initiative, made possible by an €80.8 million investment, is largely funded by Italy’s National Recovery Plan (PNRR). The goal is to deploy 137 fuel cell buses by 2026, with 127 assigned to Bologna and 10 to Ferrara.

The selected model, the Solaris Urbino 12, is equipped with a 70 kW fuel cell and hydrogen tanks capable of storing 37.5 kg, providing a range of over 350 km on a single refill.

These buses are completely emission-free: the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen generates electric power, with water vapor as the only byproduct. This also helps reduce noise pollution, improving the urban environment.

The buses will be available in two configurations, namely three-door models for urban routes and two-door models for suburban services.

Each vehicle is designed for maximum accessibility, featuring a low-floor design, air conditioning, and a ramp for wheelchairs and strollers, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive travel experience for all passengers.
